Profile:

Hetty joined the Agriculture and Land Management Programme at IEEP as a policy analyst in January 2011. She has since worked on a variety of projects on EU agricultural policy with respect to environmental concerns, focussing primarily on biodiversity, climate change and resource management issues and subsequently gaining considerable knowledge of the environmental challenges in agriculture and environmental integration in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). She is up-to-date with the on-going CAP reform discussions, and follows the debates closely. She holds an MA in Environment, Politics and Globalisation from King's College London in which she focussed her attention on the political ecology of wine production in Catalonia, Spain.

  • European Parliament report on sustainable competitiveness and innovation

    The CAP could, and should, be primarily to assist EU agriculture to become more internationally competitive and sustainable and to achieve this by innovation. It already has many instruments to do this, and the reforms could further assist. However the resources deployed could be far better used.

    A new study of the 2007-13 agri-environment schemes across the whole of EU-27 provides the first typology of ‘entry-level’ agri-environment management and environmental objectives, plus a detailed insight into the design of entry-level agri-environment schemes and calculation of payment rates in seven Member States.
