- FISBOAT
FISBOAT (Fisheries Independent Survey Based Operational Assessment Tools) conducted by IFREMER (Institute Français de Recherche pour l'Exploration de la Mer) tackles the major issue of unreliable fish stock assessment through the use of new methods based exclusively on research vessel survey data. The project evaluates how these methods perform in producing advice within defined management criteria, such as determining the optimum level of harvesting. Studies the sensitivity of the methods in anticipating changes in population biology and survey performance and compares, through case studies, test results and the corresponding management advice with historical records and actual events in specified fisheries.
- FSP
FSP (Fisheries Science Partnership) is a cooperation of NFFO and CEFAS funded by DEFRA. The project aims to build relationships between UK fishermen and scientists and to involve fishermen in the co-commissioning of science. The FSP provides information from commercial fishing catches on key stocks to supplement data sources traditionally used in ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) assessments; investigates concerns raised by fishermen on scientific assessments or on stocks not currently assessed; investigates innovative scientific methods and or more selective/environmentally friendly fishing methods; and supports the work of Regional Advisory Councils.

- MAFCONS
MAFCONS provides the scientific advisors to fisheries managers with the mathematical tools that will allow them to quantify the consequences to groundfish and benthic invertebrate species diversity of achieving particular fisheries objectives.
- The Sea Around
Us Project
The Sea Around Us Project -funded by the PEW Trust- is devoted to studying the impact of fisheries on the world's marine ecosystems. To achieve this, project staff have used a Geographic Information System (GIS) to map global fisheries catches from 1950 to the present, with explicit consideration of coral reefs, seamounts, estuaries and other critical habitats of fish, marine invertebrates, marine mammals and other components of marine biodiversity.
- PKFM
Policy and knowledge in fisheries management (PKFM) is coordinated by IFM and funded by the EU 5th Framework Programme. The objectives of the project are to identify and understand specific shortcomings in the European fisheries policy and its implementation, which have contributed to the problems evident in several European fisheries, and to devise means for their rectification. The project will focus on the knowledge production and decision-making within the fisheries management system, the interrelationships between these processes and the role played by stakeholders. Fisheries for North Sea cod will be adopted as a case study.
- SPICES
The Universités de l'Oueste Atlantique in Nantes (France) is developing SPICES (Science and Policy Integration for Coastal Ecosystems Sustainability) to achieve a sustainable balance between human activities in coastal zones and the ecosystems. To this end, SPICES develops an information base of tools, methodologies and new knowledge on integrated coastal zone management (ICZM).
